Hello there.
We've been operating free drupal5 hosting for a long time now and have decided that even though the platform has
lots of good features and in the future will possibly be 'best of breed' right now, regrettably this is not the case.
Trademark issues:
There are draconian restrictions on the use of the word 'drupal', which would require us to give up a good part
of our income, the truth is that the income from the ads is so low that we barely make enough to pay for hosting
and bandwidth. We would not mind that but we refuse to make a loss on this service because of a silly trademark,
with restrictions that - if they weren't so sad - border on the hilarious.
I do not know what they were smoking when they wrote all that stuff but it definitely was good quality.
Technical issues:
Upgrading drupal from one major release to another is a major pain, there simply is no real upgrade path between
versions without an enormous amount of manual work for every website hosted.
Because of this we have decided to stop offering this service.
If the drupal.org people should ever get their act together and make available a seamless automatic migration package
for upgrades between major versions and would allow the use of the name 'drupal' in a url without claiming
a right to a portion of our income then we will re-evaluate our position.
To all the people that currently use freedrupal5hosting to host their sites:
We will continue to offer this service until the 31st of December 2009, if between now and then you wish to
have a dump of your database please contact us using the contact form after logging in. We will provide
you with a mysqldump of your database upon your request.
best regards,
the TMC team.
